Description
Scott Gould House is a pair of almshouses built in 1866 and restored in 1981. They are constructed from local lias stone that has been cut and squared, with Ham stone dressings, and feature an asbestos cement slate roof between coped gables with hipped corners. The building has an 'L' shape, with two storeys and a five-bay elevation facing North Street, and a three-bay return to New Street.
Key architectural features include a plinth, a band course, and gables above all first-floor windows. The windows are hollow chamfered mullioned types with square labels, featuring horizontal bar casements—two-light above and three-light below. There is an additional lower window between bays four and five on the North Street elevation, and one between each bay. In bay three on North Street, there is a chamfered doorway with a flat arched head and square label, leading to a large boarded door. This bay does not have a window or gable above, but there are two plaques indicating the original and restoration dates.
The interiors have not been seen. The almshouses occupy an important corner position and contribute significantly to the streetscape. They were built by Mrs. Sophie Scott Gould of North Curry as six dwellings for widows and single women.
