Description
Furlong House is a detached house dating from the late 18th century or early 19th century, set well back from the street. It is rendered with a false ashlar lining, colourwashed, and has hipped Welsh slate roofs with brick chimney stacks. The house is arranged in an L-shape, with a compact main block and a short return wing.
The main south front has three windows, each a sash window with a slightly raised and rounded surround, stone sills, and pointed heads with interlaced bars on the first floor. The ground floor windows are 15-pane sashes flanking a central round-arched doorway. The doorway has a six-panel door under a fanlight with interlaced bars, accessed by four concrete steps and a plinth.
The right (east) return is plain, with a central eaves stack. The left return is similar but contains a small pointed light beneath the stack. The main rear wall has 12-pane sashes on both ground and first floors, and a diagonally set square decorative cast-iron ‘oculus’ to the staircase. The basement level features a 20th-century two-light casement window, a recessed doorway, and other 20th-century alterations. The return wing also has 12-pane sashes at ground and first floors, a small 20th-century light to the basement, and a 20th-century door under a lean-to porch on the right side.
The interior was not inspected, but ground-floor windows retain panelled shutters.
A sunken square courtyard is contained in the angle between the wings, approached by thirteen square-edged steps without a handrail. A decorative cast-iron balustrade is set to a weathered stone coping on the north side of the courtyard. This balustrade is of group value.
