Description
Number 43 is a house in a row, dating from the early 18th century, with alterations made in the late 18th and early 19th centuries. It incorporates substantial amounts of reset medieval fabric. The house is constructed of local stone rubble with a clay pantile roof. The west side has a stone abutment and the east side a coped gable, with brick chimney stacks, the eastern one being truncated and capped. The building has an L-shaped plan, including a rear wing on the right side.
The exterior is two storeys with an attic, and has two bays. It features sash windows with 24 small panes in all bays except the lower bay of the left-hand side, which has a mid-20th century angled bay window with a flat roof. This bay window has 1+3+1 lights and small-pane casements with transoms. The centrally placed doorway has a six-panel door leading up four steps within a plain surround. The steps have 19th-century cast-iron railings consisting of loops over pointed bars with capped intermediate rails. Later 20th-century copies of railings, set on a low concrete kerbing, delineate the front boundary wall approximately one meter from the house. Three rooflights are set high in the roof.
The interior contains reset features, including a four-centred arched head to a fireplace and a niche, which may have originally been part of a laver. There is a three-bay roof with tenoned in-line purlins, although the collars have been removed. A rear wing with a cranked collar is also present.
