Description

Weir House is a detached house built in the late 18th century. It is constructed from limestone ashlar and features a hipped Welsh slate mansard roof with stone stacks. The building is designed in an L-shape and has three storeys with a three-window east front above a cellar. The cellar includes a planked door on the left and an 8-pane sash window on the right, both leading to a canted bay that extends to the eaves.

On the ground floor, there is a central 6-panelled door accessed by stone steps, with round-headed sash windows in the flanking canted bays. The first floor features a leaded central window with stained glass, with the same arrangement of flanking bays as the ground floor. The second floor has plain 12-pane sashes in the bays and centre, along with moulded plat bands on each floor, moulded eaves supported by corbels, and a plain blocking course. The attic contains two pairs of sashes in two flat-headed dormers.

The right return of the entrance front has a three-storey canted bay on the left with round-headed sashes, moulded plat bands, and a well-crafted door with six fielded panels and a fanlight to the right. The left return features 12-pane sashes. At the rear, there is a stable and service wing that has sashes or 20th-century plastic-framed windows and is currently undergoing conversion to a dwelling as of June 1987.

Inside, the house has stairs with cantilevered stone treads, stick balusters, and a continuous wreathed handrail. There are 6-panelled doors set in moulded architraves, plaster ceiling friezes adorned with acanthus leaves, and marble and wooden dentil fireplace surrounds.
