Description
Lower Hayze is a detached house located in Limpley Stoke, dating from the 18th century and early 19th century. It is constructed of dressed limestone and features a Welsh slate roof with coped verges and gable end stone stacks. The house has a gable end facing the road and is two stories high with a four-window south front.
On the south front, there is a six-panelled door with a flat stone hood supported by brackets, positioned to the right of the left-hand building. To the right of the door is a 12-pane sash window, and to the left is a 24-pane sash window. The first floor has three 18-pane sash windows, each with cast-iron balconies, and there is a lintel string course above them. An attached bay on the right has ground floor 12-pane sash windows.
The left side of the house facing the road has a blocked beaded 2-light mullioned window on the first floor and a single-light window in the attic, along with a datestone from 1739. The rear of the house features a parallel 19th-century range in ashlar, with sash windows and a single-storey extension attached to the right. The interior was not accessible at the time of the survey conducted in May 1987.
