Description

The Odcombe gateway to Montacute Park, along with its flanking walling, is likely from the 19th century and is constructed from Ham stone ashlar. The walling is approximately 1 metre high and features plain dressed copings. The gateway is defined by four square piers: the outer piers stand about 2.5 metres tall, while the inner piers reach about 3.5 metres. These piers have plinths, a pulvinated frieze, and cornice caps, with the taller piers also displaying cabled steps and stone braziers. Between the main piers, there is a pair of 20th-century timber gates, along with matching pedestrian gates on either side. The walling extends about 15 metres to the west and about 70 metres to the east, with both sections curving to fit the boundary of the site. This gateway and walling contribute to the significant setting of Montacute House, along with the nearby New Lodge.
