Description
New Lodge, which serves as the lodge to Montacute House, is likely from the mid-19th century. It is constructed from Ham stone ashlar and features a Welsh slate roof with stepped coped gables and a central stone chimney stack. The building is two storeys high and has two bays. The principal elevation is the west gable, which includes a plinth, a string course, and moulded coping. The gable is adorned with obelisk finials over kneelers and a crown. There are shallow hollow-chamfered mullioned windows in wave mould recesses with labels, consisting of two 2-light windows below and one 3-light window above, all fitted with ornamentally leaded lights. Between the lower windows is a cambered arched doorway with incised spandrels set in a rectangular recess and a square label above. The sides and rear of the building feature horizontal bar casement windows, and there is a lean-to structure against the east gable. The interior has not been seen. This lodge, along with the nearby Odcombe gateway, is part of the significant Montacute Estate.
