MARTOCK CP EAST STREET(South side)Wellmans and Byron House,and front boundary railings

GII Formerly one farmhouse,now two cottages.C17.Ham stone ashlar;plain clay tiles over stone slate base courses between stepped coped gables;brick end and intermediate chimney stacks.Two storeys,four bays.Hollow chamfer mullioned windows,the upper with separate labels,but paired under common labels below,mostly two-light;those to Wellmans mostly rectangular leaded whereas to Byron House they are diamond leaded:between bays one and two a C19 door under rectangular fanlight in plain recess;between bays three and four a cambered arched doorway,with the label stepped up over,having boarded and studded door.On the west gable two two-light mullioned windows without labels;outshut to rear of Byron House. Interiors not seen. About four metres north of both houses are wrought iron railings,set on low stone walls,having alternate small loops and cast iron arrow points,with C20 gates opposite both doors,with curved returns at both ends,the whole adding to both the setting of the houses and the streetscene.(VAG Report, unpublished SRO,February1977).
