Wellmans And Byron House And Front Boundary Railings

Wellmans and Byron House, originally a single farmhouse, now consists of two cottages dating from the 17th century. The building is constructed from ham stone ashlar and features plain clay tiles over stone slate base courses, with stepped coped gables and brick chimney stacks at both ends and in the middle. It is two storeys high and has four bays. The windows are hollow chamfer mullioned, with the upper windows having separate labels while the lower ones are paired under common labels, mostly two-light. The windows of Wellmans House are mostly rectangular leaded, while those of Byron House are diamond leaded. Between the first and second bays, there is a 19th-century door with a rectangular fanlight in a plain recess. Between the third and fourth bays, there is a cambered arched doorway with a stepped label above, featuring a boarded and studded door. On the west gable, there are two two-light mullioned windows without labels, and there is an outshut at the rear of Byron House.

About four metres north of both houses, there are wrought iron railings set on low stone walls, featuring alternate small loops and cast iron arrow points, with 20th-century gates opposite both doors and curved returns at both ends. These railings enhance the setting of the houses and contribute to the streetscape.
