Description

Thornes the Butchers is a house with a shop, built in the early 19th century, with a shopfront added around 1900. The exterior is rendered to resemble ashlar, featuring quoin strips and a moulded cornice, topped with a low-pitched hipped roof made of Welsh slate and a brick chimney on the left side. The building has three storeys and two bays, with modern aluminium sash windows set in raised surrounds that have stressed voussoirs. The butcher's shop, dating from around 1900, is distinguished by a cows' head above the flanking pilasters, decorative coloured tiles, and cast iron ventilation grills for the basement. It also includes a plate glass window and door, along with a panelled pier that matches that of The Croft. This building was likely constructed as the domestic wing of The Croft and is primarily noted for its group value with that property.
