Description
The Town Hall, now shops, was built between 1841 and 1842 and features mid-20th century shopfronts. It was designed by architect Richard Carver. The building is constructed of brick and has Welsh slate roofs. The central block is two stories high with three bays and extends back the depth of the site, topped with a steeply pitched gable roof. Deep wooden eaves create a pediment at the gable end, which includes a tympanum that houses a clock, along with a brick and wood bell-cote that holds a bell above. The façade features round-headed sash windows with glazing bars, and a string course that runs around the windows as a hood mould. This design element is also present on the side fronts. There are single-storey wings on either side with hipped roofs behind brick parapets, which contain 20th-century shopfronts, except for the extreme left three bays where the original arcades, now painted brick, have been filled with plate glass.
