Description
Monks the Newsagents is a house with an inserted shop, dating from the early 19th century with an early 20th-century shopfront. The building is rendered with raised quoins and features a Welsh slate roof and brick stacks, with the right return hung with West Somerset slates. It is three storeys high and has four bays. The windows are set in slightly raised surrounds with rusticated voussoirs, featuring sashes with glazing bars on the first floor and modern windows above. There is a depressed arch opening to the right leading to a courtyard, also with a rusticated surround. The interior includes a first-floor room that contains two panels of plasterwork decoration from around 1700, featuring oval garlands with cherub heads, likely reset, as the ends nearest the window have been cut. This property is part of the premises of the shop listed as No 2A Silver Street.
