Description

This milestone, located by a boundary wall about 9 metres north of Pettenden on Church Street, is probably from the 18th century. It is made of Ham stone and measures approximately 450mm wide, 200mm thick, and 1.2m high, featuring a triangular top. The stone is inscribed in Roman lettering with the directions "To Wells /XX/To Somerton/VII". The old Bristol-Dorchester road historically passed through Martock, and it was turnpiked in 1761 when the Martock and South Petherton United Trust was established.
