Description
4 and 6 Broad Street is a pair of mid-19th century houses that also feature shops. The buildings are rendered and colourwashed, topped with a Welsh slate roof and brick stacks. They are wedge-shaped in plan, with party walls that converge towards the rear. A shared throughway with No. 8 is located at the left-hand end.
The exterior consists of three storeys and two bays on each side. The late 19th century shop fronts have three wide panelled pilasters and a deep moulded cornice above the fascia. There is a recessed central doorway for No. 6, a door to the upper floors at the centre, a blocked former door for the shop front of No. 4, and large vertical panes with slender moulded mullions. To the far left, there is a door leading to a stone-paved throughway that crosses the party-wall boundary. All windows are sashes set in plain reveals; the second floor has two plain windows and two 12-pane windows, while the first floor has four plain windows. Plain pilasters are positioned between the two halves of the building and above the throughway, with a deep brick stack on the right. The rear includes a parallel range with a 16-pane sash window and a large external stack that is cut back at ground level and cropped at the ridge.
This property is part of the development that occurred after Broad Street, formerly known as Wette or Water Lane, was widened between 1835 and 1849.
