Description
59 and 61 High Street is a house with a shop located on a curved corner site, dating from the early 18th century. The building is rendered and colourwashed, featuring a Welsh slate roof that curves and is hipped at the west end, along with shortened brick chimney stacks. Number 61 has a clay pantiled roof between abutments.
The exterior of No. 59 is three storeys high with three bays, while No. 61 is two storeys with two bays. No. 59 has a largely 19th-century shop front on the ground floor, which includes three display windows—one of which is subdivided—flanked by narrow pilasters. This is topped by a slim fascia with a thin wide projection timber cornice. The original double doors at the centre of the curve have been replaced with a late 20th-century door and sidelight. The upper floors of No. 59 feature 12-pane sash windows with thick glazing bars.
No. 61 is mostly a 20th-century rebuild, with 20th-century windows. The window in the lower bay one appears to be in its original position, while there is a blocked centre door and a new part-glazed door to the right. On the first floor, there is a metal casement window and a 12-pane sash window. The ground floor of No. 59 has been modified for the shop, and access to the upper floors is now through No. 61.
Inside, there is a staircase from the first to the second floor featuring a hardwood handrail, turned newel, and stick balusters, which are probably original. The first-floor partitions have been altered, but the second-floor partitions and door cases remain intact, along with an early 19th-century fireplace that has a cast-iron hearth.
