Description

The Thomas Memorial is an early 19th-century monument located 22 metres east of the chancel in the churchyard of the Church of St Peter and St Paul in Wincanton. It is made of white marble and designed in the style of John Soane. The memorial features a plinth composed of three courses, approximately 900mm square at the base, and a tapered main block. The north face has a recessed panel displaying a coat of arms with three birds and a chevron, along with an inscription. Each face of the monument is topped with a pediment supported by corner antae, a block, and a broken fluted column entwined with ivy. The memorial commemorates Elliot Grasset Thomas and his family, although the dates are not legible. Originally, the monument was surrounded by railings, but only the plinth remains today.
