Description
The West Huntspill War Memorial is a village memorial dating from around 1920, located in the churchyard of the Church of St Peter in West Huntspill.
The monument is constructed from limestone and features a cross with a wheel head positioned above an octagonal shaft, which stands on a square base raised on three octagonal steps. The cross head has splayed arms and a flat boss at the center. The tapered octagonal shaft is topped with an annulet and a cyma-moulded cap that has a ball ornament. Above the square base, there are broaches, and the upper corners of the base have mouldings.
On the south face of the memorial, the inscription reads: ‘TO THE GLORY OF GOD / AND IN MEMORY OF THE MEN / OF THIS PARISH / WHO FELL IN THE GREAT WAR / 1914 – 1919’. Below this, on the top step of the plinth, is the inscription: ‘ALSO IN GRATEFUL MEMORY / OF THOSE WHO FELL IN / WORLD WAR II / 1939 – 1945’. The bottom step features a sunken panel on each face.
