Description

A village war memorial of c. 1920 set in the churchyard of the Church of St Peter, West Huntspill. MATERIALS & PLAN: the monument is of limestone and takes the form of a cross with wheel head placed above an octagonal shaft, with a square base raised on a three octagonal steps.

The cross head has splayed arms and a flat boss to the centre. The tapered, octagonal shaft is topped by an annulet and cyma-moulded cap with ball ornament. There are broaches above the square base, which has mouldings to its upper corners. The south face is the inscribed wording ‘.TO .THE.GLORY.OF.GOD. / .AND.IN.MEMORY.OF.THE.MEN. / .OF.THIS.PARISH . / .WHO.FELL.IN.THE.GREAT.WAR. / 1914 – 1919’. Below this on the top step of the plinth Is inscribed ‘.ALSO.IN.GRATEFUL. MEMORY. / .OF.THOSE.WHO.FELL.IN. / .WORLD.WAR.II. / 1939 – 1945’. The bottom step has a sunken panel to each face.
