Description

Swell House is a farmhouse, now a house, dating from the late 17th to early 18th century. It features a rendered and colourwashed exterior with a brick and rubble core, topped by a triple-Roman tile roof. The building has brick stacks and double-curved Flemish end gables with stone copings, kneelers, and ball finials.

The symmetrical frontage is two storeys high with a layout of one bay, three bays, and one bay. The central three bays project forward beneath a stone triangular pediment, which has a small Venetian window in its tympanum. The façade includes alternating stone quoins, a cornice, and a parapet on the side units. The sash windows have glazing bars, with keyed plain openings on the side units and keyed moulded stone architraves on the central unit, which features single-hung sashes. French windows are located on each side of the ground floor.

The entrance has a central architrave door opening with a stone slab hood supported by enriched brackets, and there is a 20th-century panelled door. Above the door, there is a painted sundial on a wooden panel set in a moulded stone frame. The rear elevation has been significantly altered in the late 20th century, including changes to casements and doors. There is also a single-storey outshut to the right of the frontage.
