Description

The Rising Sun is a farmhouse, now an inn, dating back to the 16th century, with additions and alterations made in the 17th and 20th centuries. The building is constructed of “slobbered” rubble, with upper courses of painted brick, and is roofed with double Roman tiles. Brick stacks are located in the left gable end and to the right of the cross passage. The plan incorporates three rooms and a cross passage, built on a plinth set high above the roadway, with extensions to the rear.

The building is two storeys high, with three bays. It has 20th-century wooden casement windows. The main entrance is situated between the first and second bays on the left side. A large, raking buttress with a later inserted doorway is situated to the right, and a 20th-century single-storey lean-to addition extends beyond it, accessed via a staircase and a half-glazed inner door.

Inside, a stud and panel screen is located to the left of the cross passage, featuring chamfered beads with scroll stops. This is consistent with the fireplace lintel, which includes a bread oven. To the right of the cross passage, the plinth of the hall stack continues to the rear wall, displaying a fine, moulded 12-panel compartment ceiling, a moulded lintel to the fireplace, and moulded stone jambs. A chamfered stud and panel screen, partially cut, separates a featureless inner room. The upper storey was not inspected.
