Description

Manor Farmhouse is a Grade II* listed farmhouse that dates back to the late medieval period, with significant alterations made in the 16th century, including the insertion of a hall fireplace. The east gable end was partly rebuilt in 1626, while the west gable end has been demolished and the building extended by one room to the west. The interior was altered in the 18th century and restored in the late 20th century. The structure is built from graduated, squared, and coursed local grey sandstone, with some cob in the gable ends, and features a thatched roof hipped to the right, along with brick stacks on both the right and left sides of the cross passage.

The farmhouse has an open hall that has been ceiled to create a three-cell layout with a cross passage and an extension of one room to the west. At the rear, there is an outshot in the northeast corner against the rebuilt wall. The building has a long facade with first-floor windows that rise from the eaves; the left side has a six-light wooden casement, while the right side has a two-light casement. On the ground floor, there are two three-light casements to the left and one to the right of the entrance. The entrance features the remains of a moulded head of a four-centred arch doorframe, which was cut when a smaller door was inserted, and a plain chamfered four-centred door frame leads to the rear of the cross passage.

Inside, to the right of the cross passage, there are chamfered beams and a large chamfered bressumer dated 1636. A large curing chamber on the right is lit from the gable end, and there is a spice cupboard with a fielded panel in the southeast corner. To the left, there is a six-panel compartment ceiling that has been cut by a rear corridor, with a moulded beam thought to be from an earlier firehood, which has likely been reset. The grate is now set back with a stair beside it, and there are remains of a plaster frieze on the west wall, along with a cupboard in the north wall featuring fielded panels. The two rooms to the west are accessed from the rear and have a six-panel compartment ceiling with steeply chamfered beams in the inner room, which also has remains of similar plasterwork frieze and a framed partition.

The upper storey shows evidence of a full cruck and joint cruck truss roof with smoke blackening, and the room in the east gable end is open to the roof and is said to have been a cheese room, with remains of hoisting tackle. The two westerly rooms are currently used as agricultural buildings, and there are ruins of stables adjoining the property. Manor Farmhouse is also known as Lower Knapp Farm.
