Description
Bird's Farmhouse is a farmhouse dating from the 16th century, which incorporates part of a medieval hall house. It was enlarged by one room to the north in the 18th century and has undergone subsequent alterations. At the time of the survey in December 1984, it was undergoing restoration and enlargement with one room added to the south-west. The structure features some cob and rubble that is rendered, with the first floor of the south front being tile hung. The roofs are hipped on the original block and the 20th-century addition, covered with triple Roman tiles. There are external brick stacks located at the right gable end, the center of the east front, and at the north end. The building has an irregular T-plan, lying north-south, with the earlier part in an L-plan extended to the north and the 20th-century addition to the south-west.
The south front is two storeys high and has one bay on the left and two bays on the right. The 20th-century addition on the left is set back and features all 20th-century windows, including a right angular dormer oriel. On the ground floor, there is one window in the addition to the left, and two windows to the right of the porch. The right return wing has two bays with an outshot. Although the interior was not seen, it is reported to contain in the right-hand room of the south front a steeply chamfered six-panel compartment ceiling and a pointed arch door frame that provides access to the rear two-cell wing. The center features a fine moulded six-panel compartment ceiling with an unusual arrangement of a moulded wooden lintel over a fireplace, which is set on moulded timber side posts with a moulded shelf above. Additionally, there is the base of a cruck post in the east wall and a fine moulded four-centred arch door frame to the right of the fireplace.
