Description
Coalharbour is a house located in Creech St Michael, dating from the 16th century, with alterations made in the early and late 17th century, as well as in the mid-19th century. The building is roughcast over rubble, featuring quoin strips and raking buttresses at the end bays, topped with a plain clay tile roof and brick stacks at the gable ends. The plan consists of two cells with an entry now through a room at the rear. It stands two storeys high and has three bays, with 19th-century windows and a central inserted doorway that is not in use.
Inside, the left side showcases a heavily moulded plasterwork ceiling with a bay leaf centerpiece depicting the sacrifice of Isaac. There is also plasterwork over the mantel with the initials RMB, believed to represent Richard and Mary Bobbett, dated 1679, along with a coat of arms associated with the Merchant Adventurer's Company. The bedroom above features a plasterwork cornice and an overmantel with three arcades adorned with flower vases, as well as a four-panel compartment ceiling decorated with cartouches and fleur-de-lys.
On the ground floor, the right side has a moulded four-panel compartment with a chamfered lintel above the gable end fireplace, which also depicts the sacrifice of Isaac on its fireback. The interior includes a turned newel dog leg stair and raised and fielded panelling on the first floor, likely reset. Additionally, there is a two-light ovolo moulded stair window on the right gable end. Overall, Coalharbour presents a remarkable collection of decorative features behind a modest facade.
