Description

This description covers a group of three headstones located in the churchyard about 10 metres south-east of the chancel at the Church of St John the Baptist. The headstones date from the late 17th century to early 18th century and are made of Doulting stone, standing approximately 500mm above ground.

Two of the headstones belong to the Escott family and are similar in design, featuring moulded pilasters that support a cambered rope frieze, topped with a skull and flanked by flowers. One headstone is dated 1697 and the other 1695, inscribed with the initials R E(scott) and S E(scott). The third headstone is square-headed, standing 540mm above ground, and has a moulded surround with a semi-circular headed centerpiece, though the inscription is not legible. This headstone likely commemorates another member of the Escott family, who are also interred in the nearby Richard Escott chest tomb.
