Description

The Butcher's Arms is an inn with outbuildings, originally built in the 17th century and later altered and enlarged in the 19th and 20th centuries. The building is rendered over rubble and features an asbestos slate roof with overhanging eaves and sprockets, along with brick stacks. The layout consists of a long range of three buildings, with the right-hand block containing three cells and a cross passage. It is two storeys high and has a facade with a 1:2:4 bay arrangement. The windows are mainly from the late 19th and 20th centuries, except for a ground floor window in the middle block, which is a three-light ovolo moulded mullioned window that has been blocked internally. The main entrance, located between the first and second bays, has a moulded surround and a studded door, while the other entrances are modern. Between the second and third bays on the left side is an amusing inn sign made of painted and welded aluminium by Rachel Reckett, created around 1955. Inside, the inn is said to feature a pebble floor dated 1639, made with sheep's knuckle bones, and wall paintings in the bedrooms. There is also a peaked door frame to the left of the entrance, stop-chamfered beams with step and run-out stops, and a chamfered lintel above the fireplace in the cross passage.
