Description

This listing describes a group of 10 limestone headstones located between 6 and 15 meters west of the Church of St. Mary, dating from around 1700 to 1800. These headstones were repositioned in the 20th century in a row along the churchyard boundary.

The first headstone, dating to around 1800, belongs to John Goodisson and features a segmental top with drapery carved in low relief. The second headstone commemorates Richard and Jane Goodisson, who died in 1817 and 1826, and is similarly carved. The third headstone marks the grave of Mary, who died in 1760, and is adorned with an hourglass, cherub, and skull. The fourth headstone is for John S-, who died in 1761, and also has a segmental top, featuring a cherub surrounded by foliage.

The fifth headstone, from the early 18th century, displays a cartouche with skulls in relief and drapery on the sides. The sixth headstone is similar to the fifth but includes well-carved skulls, crossbones, an hourglass, pick and shovel, sickle, coffin, and cherub. The seventh headstone, dating to around 1800, is oval-shaped and depicts a young man with an urn on a pedestal surrounded by foliage.

The eighth headstone, from the late 18th century, is for Samuel Burder and features a segmental top with a cherub and flowers. The ninth headstone, from the early 18th century, has a segmental top and is carved with cherubs, an hourglass, and crossbones, with an epitaph on an open book. The tenth headstone is similar to the ninth but has moulded edges that follow the outline of carved bones, cherubs, and drapery.
