Description
Berners House is a building located on Mill Hill in Newmarket, originally constructed in the mid-18th century, with early 19th-century and mid-20th-century alterations. It consists of two houses that were formerly one, featuring two storeys and attics with four windows. The exterior is made of gault brick, highlighted by a brick string course and dentil eaves. The roof is covered with plain tiles and includes flat lead-roofed casement dormers, along with a 20th-century front chimney made of gault brick. The windows are sash style, with flat arches of gault brick, flush frames, and small-pane sashes, although most of the frames and sashes were replaced in the 20th century. There is evidence of a central 18th-century doorway with a pediment, which has since been replaced by a sash window. An early 19th-century full-height splayed bay with sash windows was added to the left-hand end of the building. Additionally, there is a 20th-century two-storey flat-roofed entrance porch made of gault brick, featuring a semi-circular headed glazed two-panel entrance door.
