Description

WEST COKER CP HIGH STREET (North side) ST5113 9/294 Main entrance gate piers and gates, 36 metres South East of Westlake House - GV II

Gate piers. C19. Ham stone. Three piers, with octagonal bases about 300mm hiqh, circular piers of about 600mm diameter and 3 metres tall, with octagonal pointed caps to main piers, circular cap to subsidiary pier at end of main boundary wall. Between the main piers, about 3 metres wide in total, a good pair of C19 wrought iron gates with wavy spikes, scroll decorated middle rails and ogee curve bracing. Gates relocated in about 1980 from roadside position: important in street scene and to the context of Westlake House (qv).
