Description
Westlake House is an 18th-century house with 19th-century alterations and additions, located on the north side of High Street in West Coker. It is constructed from Ham stone ashlar and features a hipped Welsh slate roof behind a low parapet, along with brick chimney stacks. The building has two storeys and five symmetrical bays in the main block. Notable architectural details include a plinth, a band course, and rusticated quoins. The plain sash windows, which have vertical glazing bars, are set in architraved surrounds. A projecting central porch is supported by Doric columns and pilasters, framing an architraved doorway.
On the east side, there is an elaborate single-storey, two-light square bay window adorned with Ionic pilasters and decorative elements, which is dated 1899 in the stained glass. Inside, the house features a fine 18th-century staircase and interesting plaster relief subjects on the soffit. The hall and adjacent rooms have coved ceilings, extensive fielded panelling, and 18th-century doors. The rear portion of the house is entirely from the 19th century, while the middle section may represent part of an earlier house.
