Description
The gate piers, located 20 metres north-north-east of West Coker Hall, date from around 1840 and are constructed from ham stone ashlar. They are square in shape, measuring about 450mm wide, with rebated corners and plinths. Each pier features blind pointed arched arcaded bands beneath shaped conical caps, reaching an overall height of about 3 metres. A heavy wooden gate that matches the piers is situated between them, while to the east there is a pedestrian gateway with a moulded cambered arched opening and incised spandrils. The inside of the pedestrian gate displays initials and dates, specifically J M 1781 and HMS 1634. These gate piers are notable examples and contribute to the overall design of the house and estate.
