Description

Stable Cottage is a former stable building that has been converted into a house, dating from around 1840, with some fragments from the 17th century incorporated into its structure. It is constructed from local stone rubble with Ham stone dressings and features a roof covered with concrete double Roman tiles, which are set between stepped copings topped with gabletted finials. The building has an 'L'-shaped plan and is two stories tall.

The east elevation consists of three bays, with a projection at the southern end. It has hollow chamfer 2-light mullioned windows in bays one and three, although the window in bay one may be a copy. Between these windows is a moulded cambered arched porch recess, which has incised spandrels and a heavy lintel with a square-stepped label above. Above the porch, there are three 20th-century leaded light casements in the pitched roof corners. The projecting gable features further mullioned windows, some of which are copies, and a matching 20th-century single-storey wing extends from this gable.

On the north gable, there are two 3-light blind windows with trefoil cusped heads set under a flat arch and label. Above these, there is a pointed arch that has modern infill. The interior has not been seen. Some of the fragments in the building may have originated from Naish Priory in East Coker.
