Description

Northfield Farmhouse with Laburnum Cottage is a detached farmhouse, likely dating from the 16th century. It is constructed from local lias stone that is cut and squared, with Ham stone dressings. The building features a thatched roof between coped gables, while Laburnum Cottage has a roof covered with clay double Roman tiles. There are brick chimney stacks present. The farmhouse has two storeys with an attic and consists of three wide bays, with the easternmost bay being Laburnum Cottage.

The windows are hollow chamfered mullioned types, with configurations of 3, 4, and 4 lights below and 3, 3, and 2 lights above. All windows have labels except for the upper bay 3, and all but the upper bays 1 and 2 have unworked top mitres. Some windows feature leading, and there are internal vertical iron bars in some cases. Between bays 1 and 2, there is a boarded door in a heavy frame, which is protected by a 20th-century porch. The east gable has matching windows and an entrance.

Although the interior has not been seen, it is reported to include a shallow stair turret, which is masked by rear lean-to outbuildings. The interior may also feature chamfered beams with stepped runouts, and there is a possibility of a wattle and daubed partition that is said to have a painted mural, which has been papered over. An open fireplace is located in the west gable, complete with an ogee head leading to a stone-lined oven at the rear, as well as an earlier form of bacon curing chamber. The roof timbers are likely from the late 17th century and appear to have been raised.
