Description
The Old Deanery boundary wall on the south side at the return to New Street is part of the boundary wall for the Old Deanery, located at Cathedral Green. This wall dates back to the 15th century and has undergone some additions and restorations. It is constructed of rubble, with some coping stones. The wall varies in height from approximately 3.25 to 4 meters and extends about 60 meters in length from its junction with the return at New Street to a return at the 20th-century canons' houses in The Liberty, which are not included in this listing. There is a slight change in direction towards the west end, but the wall remains continuous. This structure is an important feature in the townscape at the junction of New Street and The Liberty and is part of what was once a complete enclosure for the large site between The Liberty and Cathedral Green that was occupied by the Old Deanery.
