Description
This is a mid-to-late 18th century house situated at the junction of New Street and The Liberty in Wells, and now part of the Wells Cathedral School. The house is constructed of Doulting ashlar stonework with a Welsh slate mansard roof, featuring ogee curved coped gables and chimney stacks. The north facade is rendered, while the south facade is in buff brick.
The building is arranged with a symmetrical double-depth plan, featuring a narrow entrance hall and a rear open-well staircase. The exterior has two storeys with attics and a basement, and comprises four bays. It features a plinth, cornice, and a plain parapet. There are 12-pane sash windows set within moulded architraves. The doorway, located in the lower bay 2, has a Regency style door with a plain transom light, accessed by five concrete steps. The jambs are plain, though the remains of a former moulded architrave are visible above the doorway. A moulded pediment is supported by console brackets. Four hipped-roof dormers, each with a 9-pane sash window, are concealed behind the parapet. A single-storey rendered extension runs along the north gable, incorporating two segmental-arched 12-pane sash windows, an escape doorway, and attic stairs. The south gable is rendered and plain.
The rear elevation is also rendered and generally four-bay, with three dormers. A semicircular arched staircase window is present in bay 3, and a part-glazed door with a segmental arched head is positioned beneath. The window in the lower bay 4 is doubled. An external flight of stone steps leads to the basement.
The interior, partly inspected, features a long, narrow entrance hall with a modillion cornice. A panelled archway leads to the staircase, which has turned-on-square balusters, Doric newels, and a scrolled open string and rises through both floors. An additional arch and modillion cornice are present on the first-floor landing. Original six-panel doors remain throughout, and one first-floor room contains a white marble fireplace. The basement has segmental brick vaults, and a 2-light flush stone-mullioned casement is found in the rear wall.
A random stone boundary wall, approximately 2 metres high, extends from the southeast corner along The Liberty, featuring a raked top and brick capping with swept drops for access. A similar wall runs northwards along New Street, incorporating a plain door, square ashlar gate piers, and wooden gates. These walls contribute significantly to the streetscape at this prominent corner location.
