Description
Number 6 is a mid-18th century house in a row, located on New Street, Wells. The exterior is rendered and colourwashed, with a Welsh slate roof, half-hipped to the south and with a plain gable to the north. Brick chimney stacks are present, the north one partly rendered. The house has two storeys with an attic and a basement, and is four bays wide. It has segmental arched twelve-pane sash windows with thick glazing bars and some crown glass, set in plain openings. Bay 3 on the upper level is blind and painted. Matching nine-pane sashes with flat heads feature in basement bays 1 and 2, with a part-glazed door in basement bay 3. The main entrance is in ground floor bay 4, accessed by seven steps leading to a six-panel door with an ornamental fanlight above, sheltered by a 20th-century hood supported on timber brackets. Two hipped dormers incorporate six-pane sashes and slate-clad cheeks. The interior of the house was not inspected. Early 19th century iron railings with hand-formed spearhead tops are set on low ashlar walling along the front boundary, extending around the basement area and up to the doorway. A matching gate is located opposite the basement door, and a later iron handrail is positioned to the right of the main doorway.
