Description
WELLS
ST5446 THE LIBERTY 662-1/6/300 (North side) Boundary walls to No.3 and to Lantern House (Lantern House not included)
GV II
Boundary walls to front of Lantern House (not included) and Polydor House (qv). C18 and C19. Rubble, with ashlar dressings. Opposite Lantern House the wall is approx 3m high, without coping, with central plank door to segmental head in flush stone haunched voussoirs. At the right-hand end are 2 tall square C20 stone piers with pyramidal cappings on plain bands, and containing plank gates. The wall continues to the right, over a plank door to concrete lintel, then pair of lofty piers, part ashlar to the left, and including early stonework to the right, rebuilt in the upper part; these contain a pair of plank gates. The wall continues with an early saddle-back coping with roll-top, mainly at approx 1.8m height, but dropping to approx 1.5m in the central section, swept at the levels changes. Opposite the main entrance door to Polydor House is a pair of square ashlar piers with flat pyramidal cappings. A section of wall returns to the front of the house to the left of the doorway, and also returns at the left-hand end to the E boundary of the site. This boundary, with other walling in the street, is important as part of the townscape in The Liberty, but also incorporates fabric of historic interest.
