Description
The gate piers and boundary walls to Widcombe Hill House date from the mid to late 18th century, possibly after 1776. The structure features ashlar and rubble materials. At the right side of the site, there are two large square rusticated piers, with the left pier having a moulded base that is partly exposed and a moulded capping on the blocking course, which supports large stone pine cones in urns. There is a pair of 20th-century plank gates. To the right, there is approximately a 1-meter run of rubble wall on a small plinth, leading to a carriage house (not included), topped with weathered coping. To the left, there is a similar run of wall, followed by about 1.5 meters of coursed work that stops at a rusticated pier with pyramidal capping. Here, the stone wall returns to the front of the house. The wall continues to the left at about 1.7 meters in height, in a series of five steps with swept coping, following the slope downhill, and ends at a rubble pier. The prominent finials on the structure are reminders of the extensive stone-cutting business that was historically prominent in this area.
