Description
These are two houses located at the end of Church Street in Widcombe. They were built in the mid-19th century. The front is limestone ashlar, with a rough, pecked finish on the ground floor, while the rear of number 3 is of coursed rubble. The roof is covered in concrete tiles.
The houses are three storeys high, with two windows at number 3 and three at number 4. All the windows are sash windows with plain reveals and sills, containing nine/twelve or twelve panes of glass. Number 3 has a central, panelled front door with a shallow transom light, sheltered by a flat slab hood supported on cast iron brackets, with a later window inserted above the hood. To the left of number 4 is a similar door and hood, with a window above, but lacking the transom light. Original cast iron foot-scrapers are present at each door. A plain coped gable has a stack positioned to the right, with a larger stack at the party wall. The rear of number 3 features twelve-pane sash windows on each floor. Number 4 has a later 19th-century wing with a canted bay window containing plain sashes. The interiors have not been inspected.
These were modest houses, likely serving Widcombe Manor and representing the artisan class.
