Description
Three houses, located at the end of the row on Church Street in Widcombe, were built in the early 19th century and have undergone alterations in the 20th century. The houses are constructed from limestone ashlar with slate roofs. They have a narrow, single-depth plan with various extensions to the rear.
The exterior displays three storeys, each with a single window. The first and second floors feature twelve-pane paired sash windows, although the second floor is blind to numbers 8 and 10, and the first floor of number 10 is plain, with only a small twelve-pane window on the ground floor. Each house has a panelled door sheltered by a slab hood supported on brackets; numbers 8 and 9 share this feature and retain original cast iron footscrapers. A plain band runs above the first floor, surmounted by a cavetto cornice, blocking course, and a parapet. The left gable end is coped and plain. The rear elevation, also with a parapet, has a variety of windows, including paired eight-pane sashes at number 9 and entirely 20th-century windows, including a dormer, at number 10, above a deep lean-to extension. A heavy quadrant mould string sits above the first floor and is cut through at rainwater drops.
The interiors have not been inspected. These modest artisan cottages were likely built to serve Widcombe Manor and were constructed around the same time as numbers 5-7 along the street, with slight variations in detail.
