Description
Haversham House is a house in a row, dating from the late 18th century, but it incorporates significant remains from the 15th and especially the late 16th century. The building is rendered and colourwashed over rubble, with painted ashlar dressings and a Welsh slate roof supported by stone chimney stacks.
The exterior features two storeys and three bays, with a plinth, cornice, and plain parapets. The outer windows are shallow canted full-height bays, each with composite sash windows consisting of 8+12+8 panes, while the upper window in bay two is a 12-pane sash. The central doorway has a five-panel door beneath a three-pane rectangular fanlight, all set in a stone surround with Doric pilasters, a full entablature, and pediments, with a footscraper to the right.
Inside, the rear includes an exposed stone wall with a 16th-century fireplace featuring a wide four-centred arch, alongside a three-light casement window with 15th-century moulded stone mullions, which may have been imported. There are two deep ceiling beams with stop-chamfered ends. To the left of the fireplace is a small square salt cupboard. A rear passage contains a two-light casement and an external three-plank ledged door. On the first floor, there is another fireplace with a four-centred arch, a blocked three-light casement with flush chamfered mullions to its left, and an early two-light casement on the second floor. The inspected part of the roof includes butt purlins, and the basement has two moulded beams.
