Description

This is an 18th-century house located on New Street in Wells. The house is constructed of Doulting stone ashlar, with a Welsh slate double Mansard roof behind Dutch curved gables, and ashlar chimney stacks. It is two storeys high with attics, and comprises five bays with single-bay extensions to each side. The front elevation features a plinth, cornice, and a plain, shallow parapet. Plain sash windows are fitted throughout, with keystoned heads. A six-panel door is located in the lower central bay, accessed by three steps and set within a semicircular arched recess. This recess has a radially glazed fanlight and is flanked by Doric pilasters supporting an open pediment on console brackets. Three segmental-roofed dormers feature six-pane sash windows. One side extension is slightly lower and matching in style, with semicircular arched openings – one a niche on the ground floor, and one a plain sash window above. On the opposite side is a casement window with a lowered sill to the ground floor, and a plain sash window above.

The south side of the house has two bays, with a 12-pane sash window at the upper left and a plain sash window to the right. At ground floor level is a 12-pane sash window to the right, and a six-panel door with a rectangular fanlight, timber pilaster doorcase, and flat hood, accessed by two steps. The interior was not inspected.

Attached to the northeast corner of the house is a tall, rendered stone wall with a gateway. The gateway features square piers with moulded tops, contributing to the overall street scene.
