Description

Monmouth House is an impressive 18th-century town house located on Cork Street. The main front of the building is positioned at a right angle to the street and features ashlar stonework with a hipped tiled mansard roof. It has a moulded cornice and a parapet with coping. The house consists of two storeys, a basement, and an attic, with three gabled dormers. There are five windows in architraves, with 19th-century casements, two of which are on the ground floor and have small balconies. The basement windows are sashes with glazing bars. The central entrance has a panelled door beneath a pedimented entablature, accessed by steps flanked by panelled piers.

To the street, there is a three-bay, three-storey return with a band over the ground (basement) floor. The two right-hand bays are blind with sash rebates. There is a segmental-headed mid-19th-century half-glazed door in an architrave to the left, and a modern shop front to the right. A panelled chimney is located over the right-hand bay. The former garden is marked by squat rustic piers with reed-moulded capping. Inside, the ground floor features panelled shutters, and the entrance hall displays plaster replicas of the Parthenon frieze, created by Henning in 1819, above the doors of the flanking rooms.
