Description

The premises of the Frome-Selwood Building Society is an important building located at the top of Market Place. It has an appearance from the 1860s, though it may have originally been Stuckeys Bank, which was built here in 1835. This 4½ storey ornamental corner block features Elizabethan architectural elements. The building is constructed of ashlar stone and includes cornices over each floor and moulded cill strings. It has fluted end piers topped with floral caps, a cornice and corniced parapet, and end finials. The gable above the rounded attic window is adorned with three diagonally placed finials.

The building also has a three-storey oriel window with a configuration of 1 + 2 + 1 lights. The original ornamental shop front features an arched doorway to the left and two windows, with the left-hand window framed by barley sugar colonettes at the base of the oriel, which is topped with a pediment that includes an armorial cartouche. The spandrels of the door and the end pilasters have relief carvings. Additionally, there is a four-bay return to Stony Street that maintains a similar architectural treatment, with paired windows above.
