Description

The premises of the Cheltenham and Gloucester Building Society, formerly known as the County Court Offices, is an early 18th-century building with ground floor alterations from the 19th century. It is constructed of ashlar stone and features a Cotswold stone roof. This formal Queen Anne town house has two storeys and attics, with four windows across the front. The ground floor has been extensively adapted, including a moulded surround to the left-hand window and two large modern glazing bar sashes with unusual modern segmental cornices to the right. There is a narrow panelled door topped with an unusual modern pediment and flanked by modern pilasters. A string course runs along the first floor, which has four sashes with glazing bars, moulded stone architraves, and bull-nosed cills. The roof has stone verges and ashlar end stacks, with three original dormers featuring leaded casements; the outer dormers are pedimented, while the centre one has a segmental pediment. The building has a U-plan, with the right-hand rear section rising to an upper cruck. The front roof contains two collar-trusses with king posts and through purlins. Recent work revealed a painted emblem of the Apothecaries Company, which has been restored by Mrs Eve Baker and is now displayed on an internal wall near its original position.
