Description
St Edward's Hall is a building from 1878, designed by Medland. It features coursed rubble with a tiled roof and has an L-shaped layout, with the entrance tower located at the angle. The building is two storeys high, housing a library on the lower level and an assembly hall above. It showcases a mix of Gothic and Elizabethan architectural styles. The north front has three windows; the outer ones are two-light with stone mullions and transoms, complete with drip moulds, while the centre features a two-storey bay with four-light windows. The gable ends of the hall are adorned with large Decorated windows, and there are additional two and three-light windows on the other sides. The roof gables have stone verges and ashlar stacks. The entrance tower is also two storeys high, featuring a statue in a niche above the door and a spire with a lowered bell chamber.
Inside, the Town Hall Chamber boasts an arch-braced roof and a presence gallery. A notable feature of the hall is its collection of paintings, primarily copies of 17th-century originals, along with several original miniatures from the Captain Christie Crawford Collection. It is also reported to contain a museum.
