Description

Numbers 16 and 17 Stony Street are a group of buildings of group value, probably dating to around 1688, as evidenced by a rainwater head at the rear of No. 16. The buildings are three storeys high and constructed of rubble walls with ashlar dressings and worn quoins. They feature a modillion cornice over a pulvinated frieze and a parapet. Originally, there were five windows with architrave surrounds; three originally had triangular pediments, which have since been removed. The windows are sash windows without glazing bars. Two modern shop fronts have been added.

At the rear is a large stair turret with a pyramidal slate roof. Several stone mullioned and cross mullioned windows with drip moulds and leaded lights are present, set within moulded surrounds. One window has an oak mullion and transom. A lead gutter with stooped ornament is located below the first-floor landing window. The original staircase retains some historic fabric, including newels with turned pendants, scribed moulding on the risers, and wrought iron "S" scroll panels, which may be original. A pendant is also found in the ceiling of the stair turret.

A small, possibly timber-framed projection exists at the rear of the property, rendered and with oak mullions to the windows. A studded doorway, dating to the late 17th century, is located at the rear of No. 17, featuring a moulded ovolo stopped surround.
