Description

The cross near the opening to Cheap Street is a Grade II listed structure dating from 1871, originally serving as a drinking fountain. It was designed by the artist and author E V B, who was the wife of the Hon and Rev Boyle of Marston Bigot. The cross features a tall, octagonal shaft made of Devon marble, topped with a foliate cross. At the base, there is a large moulded octagonal basin that supports a central octagonal shaft, which is adorned with floral capping. The carving was completed by a local craftsman named Joseph Chapman.
