Description
The George Hotel is a building that was rebuilt in the early 1750s, with its front altered in the early 19th century and the interior remodeled in 1874. It stands three storeys tall and is constructed of painted ashlar. The front features three bays, with a lesser set-back bay to the left. On the ground floor, there is a central arched entrance flanked by two three-light 19th-century sash windows, all in architrave surrounds. The first floor has an iron verandah balcony, likely from the 20th century, with French windows and a band above. The second floor contains three 19th-century sash windows, also in architrave surrounds. The building is topped with a cornice and parapet, and has two hipped slate roofs with a central valley, along with brick side chimneys, the right-hand one featuring a stone cornice. Each roof has one segmental-headed dormer. The hotel is a prominent feature of the Market Place and has played an important role in Frome's history. There is a three-storey lower extension from around 1800 set back to the right, which has a band over the first floor, a cornice and parapet, a three-light window in an arched surround on the second floor, and a later oriel flat bow window on the first floor. The ground floor features a mid-19th-century shop front with a moulded cornice and pilaster strips.
