Description
Nos 7 and 8 Market Place is a building that dates from around 1830 to 1840, but incorporates elements from a house built around 1700. It has two storeys and an attic, with a five-bay front made of ashlar stone. The ground floor features a band above it, a heavy modillion cornice, and a parapet with a moulded coping that includes four inset square windows—two of which have marginally glazed casements, while the others are blocked. The first floor has plate glass windows set in moulded architraves and pierced stone balconies. There are also two modern shop fronts. The roof is hipped and covered with slate, featuring one flat top dormer located to the left of centre above a parapet window. The side elevation is constructed of rubble on a rounded plinth and includes one small window in a bolection surround. The rear of the building is irregular, showcasing three gables from the earlier house, with the outer two gables featuring two-light ovolo mullion windows with drips. Inside, the ground floor of No 7 has an egg and dart cornice, while No 8 retains part of a late 17th century to early 18th century staircase leading from the first to the second floors.
