Description

The National Westminster Bank was built around 1830 as an Assembly Room for Lord Cork and Thomas Bunn. It is attributed to Wyattville, although the plans were signed by John Pinch of Bath. The building likely underwent alterations in the 1850s to achieve its current "Bankers' Georgian" appearance. It features an imposing two-storey front made of ashlar stone, with a high moulded plat band that supports Ionic columns framing the first floor. This floor is designed as a large panel framed by pilasters. The simple entablature includes a cornice and parapet that slightly project at each side.

On the first floor, there are two windows with glazing bar sashes, each adorned with moulded architraves and cornices, and a moulded panel above both. The ground floor was formerly open and now has three round beaded openings with modern glazing, the center one being wider, and a door to the right of it. The roof is hipped and covered with slate. The west side has a three-bay return that reflects the front design, but here the outer bays consist of panels formed by flanking pilasters, with moulded panels above the windows. The central bay is recessed and flanked by engaged Ionic columns. The interior has been gutted.
