Description
The former stables to Monmouth House, dating from the late 17th century, are located on Cork Street. The building presents a plain façade to the street, while the north front is more interesting despite alterations. It is two storeys high, constructed of coursed rubble, and features a coved cornice beneath a half hipped pantile roof. The structure has five bays, although some openings have been blocked. The right-hand side has a wider bay with a doorway on the first floor, framed by moulded reveals, and modern garage doors below. There are four windows on the first floor, also in moulded reveals, with the centre window lacking dressings and the former central moulded mullion. On the ground floor, there is a central Tudor arch doorway with moulded spandrels, flanked by cross-mullion windows that have coved hoods; one window on the right side is missing its lower mullion. Garage doors are located to the left. Additionally, there is a ledged door in moulded reveals, dating from around the 1680s and originally featuring an ovolo type stop, located in the western return. The interior has been converted for use as stables and includes chamfered oak beams and a tiebeam.
