Description
This is a former town house, now offices, located in Minchinhampton High Street. It dates to the early 18th century. The front of the building is constructed from ashlar, while the sides and rear are of random rubble limestone. The roof is covered with stone slates, and features ashlar chimneys. The house is three storeys high, with a cellar.
The building is designed in a Classical style. The front elevation has a four-window pattern on each floor. Windows have moulded architraves, keystones, and bull-nosed sills. The ground and middle floors feature 12-pane sashes. The windows on the middle floor have keystones that connect with a string course and run into a modillion cornice. The upper floor has nine-pane sashes with keystones extending up to the parapet; the central two windows have urns positioned above. Large corner pilasters rise to short attic pilasters topped with carved, gadrooned urns. A pedimented doorway, located in the third bay, has later glazed doors with a rectangular light above the door. Parapet-mounted chimneys flank the front, one with a modillion enriched cap. The roof is double-pitched, with hipped ends behind the front parapet and two gables at the rear. The rear elevation incorporates a mix of sash and casement windows.
Inside, there is one particularly fine room with a panelled interior featuring a chimneypiece with fluted Ionic pilasters. Spear-topped railings, with gates, provide access to ramps that lead down to round arched cellar openings. The building is considered the finest town house on High Street.
